The Bread of the Desert

Alles über Datteln

Wonderfully sweet and with a light honey aroma, the Deglet Nour Date is the perfect dessert. As queen of dates, she does not correspond to the other varieties known from the supermarket, which are rather dry and less sweet to remember. On this page you will learn more about the history of dates and some of the most important varieties.

The story

The real date palm (Phoenix dactylifera) is one of the oldest cultivated plants in the world.

The ancient Babylonians are said to have carried out the first refinements as early as 7000 years ago. Like hardly any other plant, the date palm is adapted to the conditions of the Mediterranean and Arabia. Due to its elastic structure, it resists the strong winter winds and uses its large palm leaves as a protection against the intense sunlight.

Origin and cultivation

Due to fossil finds, the date palm is already known to have grown in the Tertiary period (millions of years BC). These were cultivated by the ancient Babylonians as early as 5000 years BC.

Due to its resistance to the sun and strong winds, the date palm is very suitable for the climate there and also in the Mediterranean and Arabia where it is preferably found today.

It is one of the most important agricultural products in the area today.

Dates can be eaten and processed both fresh and dry.

Here, fresh dates place higher demands on transport and storage. They are also even more sensitive to pressure than dry ones (pressure points).

In addition to distinguishing between fresh and dried, it is also selected according to the size and appearance of the dates. An exception here, of course, are dates that are delivered on the stem.

Dates in the kitchen

Dates in a bacon coat are now a classic of the not so healthy way of life. Very tasty in taste is this a snack that you should not treat yourself to every day.

Dates are also very good for sweetening cakes and baked goods (date syrup or date sweet – ground dried dates).

In addition to these possibilities, the date remains as a delicious natural dessert or for in between the consumption method number one.
